GI@MED - Electronic organization of agricultural schools with geoinformation technologies for the promotion of convergent strategies in the management of rural regions, water resources and the environment in the South-Eastern Mediterranean

Project description

The project GI@MED aims at the promotion of the collaboration between Greece and Egypt for the confrontation and the enhancement of management capacities of common rural and environmental problems, which come up due to similar influencing climatic factors and geographic location.

GI@MED is submitted following the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding for the collaboration between the involved partners at the 6th Joint Interministerial Committee on July 2006 in Cairo. According to this the development of a Greek-Egyptian bilateral cooperation frame is promoted, as the core of an extended future network of regional cooperation of Mediterranean South-European and Arabic countries, for the promotion of digital applications and modern geoinformation technology in the agricultural faculties. Main axes of Actions constitute:

  1. The electronic organization and upgrading of existing infrastructures of digital technology on the Egyptian partners side with the creation of geoinformation laboratory,
  2. The equipment of the Egyptian partners for field work for the most optimal exploitation of their new laboratory with the possibility of processing data in real time,
  3. the planning and the development of relational databases that will contain data for land use, management of water resources, environmental, economic, demographic and other ancillary data for the programmed actions,
  4. The training and exchange of researchers for the dissemination of knowledge between the member partners concerning the use of geoinformation technologies and their applications in the agricultural sector and in the environment for decision support in management,
  5. The operation of partners with the support of newly attained equipment and knowledge in real time pilot studies, and
  6. The development of decision support systems (DSS), which will allow the study of alternative scenarios.

With these actions GI@MED promotes the harmonious and balanced development in Mediterranean with the smoothing out of differences in the capacity and possibility of new technologies utilization.

GI@MED is based on the idea that we share a common sea, consequently we share a common future, and it supports with its actions the possibility of applying political decisions and promoting the European policy in the wider Mediterranean area.
